BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has thrown his weight behind Team India for their loss to New Zealand in the World Test Championship final last month.

Virat Kohli’s men loss the inaugural WTC final in Southampton by 8 wickets as the Kiwis chased down the target of 139 in the final hour of the sixth day, the Reserve Day. Despite topping the WTC points table with comeback Test series wins against Australia and England, the Asian giants failed at the final hurdle.

Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain, now came in defence of the side. He asserted that a single game doesn’t define the legacy of the Indian team which has been indomitable at home and largely competitive away for the most part of the last five years.

“Just one single match can’t decide whether they are bad or good,” Sourav Ganguly told News18.

India will play good cricket against England: Sourav Ganguly

When asked about predicting the result of the upcoming 5-Test series between India and England, Sourav Ganguly refrained from making any bold predictions. Instead, he pointed out that since it’s a long series, both teams will have opportunities to make a comeback if they fall behind.

The southpaw also is confident that the visitors will perform well. India lost 4-1 on their previous visit to England in 2018.

“It can’t be predicted. … They (India) will play good cricket. It’s a long series, so there will be chances for both the teams to equalise,” the former captain stated.

Another issue surrounding the Indian squad has been that of Shubman Gill. The young opener sustained a leg injury which will keep him out of action for more than two months. In that case, he is certain to miss at least the first three Tests of the series.

Recently, reports revealed that the selectors back home declined the management’s request to send replacements – Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal who are in Sri Lanka for white-ball matches – and asked to use the likes of Mayank Agarwal and Abhimanyu Easwaran.

When asked about the same, the BCCI President said he doesn’t interfere in team selection matters, and the management will take care of it.

“I don’t interfere in all these matters. Team Management will decide this,” Sourav Ganguly said.
