Glamorgan Batsman Sam Northeast Scores 410* In A County Game; Becomes 11th Batsman To Hit Quadruple In FC Cricket

Sam Northeast of Glamorgan made the ninth-highest first-class score in history on Saturday against Leicestershire, scoring 410 not out.
The performance by Northeast, which was part of a massive team total of 795-5, is the highest score of the twenty-first century and just the 11th individual score of 400 or more in the history of first-class cricket.
The 32-year-old hit a six back over the bowler’s head to reach his 400th run and then hit another six off the subsequent delivery.
He faced 450 balls in all, hitting 45 fours and three sixes. His team declared the innings in Leicester at the lunch break.
Since the County Championship’s inception in 1890, Northeast now holds the third-highest score.
Sam Northeast Breaks Several Other Records
The fourth day of the four-day County Championship division two match saw Glamorgan leading by 211 runs at lunch. Northeast’s potential to break more records was eliminated by the declaration.
The final score of 795-5 broke the previous record of 718-3 set in 2000 for the Welsh county, and Northeast now holds the record for the best individual score in the county history, surpassing Steve James’s 309 not out from the same match 22 years ago.
The greatest partnership for a wicket in county history, between Northeast and Chris Cooke, who was 191 not out when the declaration came, was 461 runs for the sixth wicket.
In a first-class game, Brian Lara’s 501 for Warwickshire versus Durham in 1994 holds the all-time record.
Ten years later, Lara notched the only other 400-point performance of the century for West Indies against England with a score of 400 not out.
Other than Lara’s 501, Archie MacLaren’s 424 for Lancashire against Somerset in 1895 is the only other individual score higher than Northeast’s in the County Championship.
