Shane Watson, a former Australia all-rounder, expressed concern over Aaron Finch’s T20 exploits ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year, claiming that the captain’s IPL 2022 performance did not inspire confidence.

Aaron Finch’s extended lean patch in the shortest version of the game has prompted speculation about whether he will be a burden for Australia at the T20 World Cup. In 2021, Finch averaged 28 runs per innings and batted at a strike rate of just over 120 while captaining Australia to their first T20 World Cup victory.

What I Saw Of Aaron Finch In IPL Was Not Great: Shane Watson

Finch’s strike rate has dropped in recent years, and he hasn’t averaged more than 30 since 2020. Finch struggled with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2022, averaging just 17.20 runs in five games.

“What I saw of him during the IPL in particular for KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders), wasn’t great and it didn’t fill me with a lot of confidence,” Watson told Isa Guha for the ICC.

“But there’s a lot of cricket leading up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and I know he will be working through it as much as he can and, for Australia’s sake, I really hope he can sort that out.

“But at the moment it is pretty glaring. He has got the skills and he is one of the greatest short-form batters that has played for Australia, so he can definitely turn it around, but what I saw didn’t fill me with a lot of confidence.”

It’s too late to drop Aaron Finch, according to the former opener, who was part of the 2015 World Cup-winning side, and the skipper still has a few games before the World Cup to work out his technical difficulties.
