Former Australian captain Ian Chappell feels that Australian head coach Justin Langer won’t continue with the team beyond the Ashes against England.

Langer was under the hammer for the last few months for his coaching style and relations with the team players. The head coach had a meeting with both the Australian captains Tim Paine and Aaron Finch along with vice-captain Pat Cummins to check on the progress of the national team.

Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings and CEO Nick Hockley were also present in that emergency meeting. In fact, Hockley backed Langer to take the team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and The Ashes at home despite the chaos that was happening in the dressing room and the back to back T20I series loss to West Indies and Bangladesh.

It’s going to be hard for Justin Langer to recover the lost ground: Ian Chappell

However, Chappell is doubtful if Langer will continue as head coach after the Ashes and he opined that winning matches will only help the former Western Australia player to shut his critics.

“I think Justin (Langer) can last the Ashes but whether he goes any further than that, I would be doubtful,” Chappell said on a podcast for Fox Sports.

“It’s going to be hard for Langer to recover the lost ground and very difficult for Justin to drastically change his coaching style… It always helps if you are winning. When you start losing, leaks happen and people get aggravated. Winning can solve a lot of problems,” he added.

If you’re not getting the results, then you’ve got to expect the negativity: Ricky Ponting to Justin Langer

Langer’s former teammate Ricky pointing said if anyone takes the role of a coach or captain for Australia then he has to face the negativity.

“As I made really clear to Justin when you’re in that position in Australian sport, whether you’re a high-profile coach or a captain of a national team, if you’re not getting the results, then you’ve got to expect the negativity,” Ponting told 2GB Radio.

Langer will aim to work with Aaron Finch on winning the T20 World Cup first in the October-November period in the United Arab Emirates.
