Reigning IPL champions, the Chennai Super Kings have suffered a big blow mid-way through the 2024 edition as their Kiwi opening batsman Devon Conway has been ruled out of the entirety of the season.

Conway had picked up a Thumb injury during New Zealand's home T20I series against Australia right before the Premier League began. CSK, instead of going for a like-to-like replacement, has named England pacer Richard Gleeson as a replacement for the explosive batter.

This development was confirmed on IPLT20.com, the official website of the tournament, earlier today. Richard Gleeson will join the CSK camp in the coming days and he has been acquired by Ruturaj Gaikwad's side for the bowler's reserve price of INR 50 Lakhs.

"Devon Conway ruled out TATA IPL 2024 due to an injury, Chennai Super Kings add Richard Gleeson to the squad. Devon Conway has been ruled out of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to an injury." - the official statement on IPLT20.com read.

How did Devon Conway suffer Thumb injury?

Back in February, the Blackcaps were taking on Trans-Tasmanian rivals Australia in a 3-match T20I series on home soil. After losing the 1st T20 by 6-wickets, the Kiwis had set out to equalize the series in Auckland's iconic Eden Park stadium. During the 1st innings when the Aussies were batting, a 140+ delivery from Adam Milne in just the 2nd over of the inning, wobbled and struck the left-thumb of Devon Conway, who was keeping the wickets.

Right after the ball struck him, Devon Conway was looking in a considerable amount of pain and as a result of that hit, the wicket-keeper batsman left the pitch. He was sent straight for X-rays and was eventually ruled out of the series which the Kiwis went on to lost by 3-0. "An X-ray has cleared Devon Conway of an obvious fracture to his left thumb and he has returned to the ground." - a New Zealand national team official had said.

The next day, Devon Conway was sent for further treatment and therein, it was revealed that it is actually a serious injury and one that might rule him out from IPL 2024's first few matches. That was a big blow for the Chennai Super Kings, who got lucky all because of the fact that they acquired Rachin Ravindra for less than 5 Crores in the 2024 auction.

Conway had anyways missed all of CSK's matches until now and now it has been confirmed that the batter, who scored 924 runs from 23 matches across the 2022 and 2023 season, has been ruled out entirely from IPL 2024.

Who is Richard Gleeson?

Richard Gleeson is an English international right-arm fast bowler, who made his debut for the Three Lions when aged 34. In his first 8 balls of international cricket, Gleeson had got rid of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant during an India Vs England T20 match in Birmingham on July 9, 2022.

He has good experience of playing in franchise leagues around the world and has represented teams like Delhi Bulls (Abu Dhabi T10), Durban's Super Giants (SAT20), Manchester Originals (Hundred), Rangpur Riders (BPL), Peshawar Zalmi (PSL), Melbourne Renegades (Big Bash) and the Gulf Giants (ILT20).
