The Sri Lanka team started the three-match series with a sensational win in a high-scoring encounter over New Zealand. The visitors beat the Black Caps in the thrilling encounter through a super over in the first T20I of a three-match series at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday, April 2.

The wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham is leading New Zealand in the absence of the important players, who were not available in the series because the board allowed them to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan players will join the IPL franchise after this series.

The Dasun Shanaka-led team posted a mammoth total of 196 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. Charith Asalanka shone with the bat as he scored 67 runs off 41 balls, including two boundaries and six sixes. All-rounder Jimmy Neeshan was the best bowler for New Zealand, picking up 2 wickets for 30 runs.

Sri Lankan bowlers gave a good start with the ball, picking up two wickets for just 3 runs in 1.1 overs. Skipper Tom Latham and pitcher Daryl Mitchell steered the innings with a crucial partnership. The visitors took control of the game by taking wickets at regular intervals. Ish Sodhi smashed a six off the final ball of the innings when seven runs were required.
