Former Australian leg-spinner Brad Hogg has termed Ravichandran Ashwin as a selfless and competitive cricketer, who he reckoned, is doing good things for Indian cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin has impinged himself as Team India’s biggest match-winner in Test match cricket and the off-spinner was at the height of his powers during the recent winter as he played a stellar role in India’s series wins in Australia and then against England on home soil.

Ashwin not only finished as India’s second-highest wicket-taker during the Australian series but he also went on to become only the 4th Indian to claim 400 Test wickets during the home series against England.

Speaking to Times Now, Brad Hogg backed Ravichandran Ashwin, who finished as the leading wicket-taker [67 wickets in 13 matches at 20.88] for India in the World Test Championship cycle, to breach the 600-wicket mark besides doing the unthinkable-breaking Muttiah Muralitharan’s 800 Test wickets record.

“Ashwin is 34 now. I think he will probably play till 42 in Tests. I think his batting might drop off but he’ll be more lethal with the ball by the time passing by. I can see him pushing 600+ Test wickets at least. He might even break Muttiah Muralitharan’s record (of 800 Test wickets) as well. The reason why I think he’s so good because he is adaptable and his hunger of continuing to grow up as a cricketer. He also played county cricket to get used to England conditions and that’s how he has become so successful especially in recent years,” said Brad Hogg.

Hogg also lauded Ravichandran Ashwin for the manner in which he handled himself and mentored debutant Axar Patel, who was in demolition mode during the recent series against England.

”The other thing is Axar Patel has dominated in the last couple of Test matches while opening the bowling with Ashwin, but the way Ashwin handled himself there to mentor Axar, is simply amazing. Cricket is a team game. It has helped in his (Axar’s) performances, making them an improved bowling unit. Ashwin is a really selfless cricketer and is creating wonderful things in Indian cricket,” said Brad Hogg.
