Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach discussed the possibility of David Warner retiring from at least one format of international cricket.

When Warner was ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar trophy earlier this year, Ponting suggested that the 36-year-old had missed a big opportunity to retire on a high. This was when David Warner scored a double-century in his 100th test match at his home ground of Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in December 2022.

Apart from the double-ton, the DC captain has been in poor form for months, leading to further speculation that he might retire. He himself suggested back in January that 2023 might be his last year in international cricket.

In a recent interview with Times of India, Ricky Ponting was asked whether Warner should retire from any one format of international cricket, to which he gave a non-descript answer, saying:

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“If you look back through the history of the game, there haven’t been many players who have been able to dominate all formats of the game at the same time.”

The former Australia captain also referred to an example from his own career.

“It’s as important as the individual wants it to be. When I was coming to the end of my career, T20 cricket was starting to take off around the world. I made a decision to not play T20 cricket and focus on ODIs and Tests for Australia because there was a 50-over World Cup coming and I had to be the best player I could. I knew if I was going to play all T20s then something had to give,” he said.

Ricky Ponting reveals the reason for making David Warner the captain of the Delhi Capitals this year

DC head coach Ricky Ponting revealed why David Warner was named the captain of the side in IPL 2023.

The Delhi-based franchise was looking for a new skipper, after their regular captain Rishabh Pant was side-lined after a horrific car crash in December 2022.

Ponting told that the Capitals did consider vice-captain Axar Patel for the job, but it was Warner’s pedigree as an IPL-winning captain that gave him an edge.

“We really thought about it. Just a little bit of extra experience went David Warner’s way. He has won an IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad as captain. He started his IPL career in Delhi and he is a durable player.”

Ricky Ponting and Delhi Capitals will hope that David Warner can repeat the feat he did with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2016, as they face Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their next match on April 8.
