For the second season in a row, Steve Smith is set to ply his trade for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League. The former Australia captain will make a brief return to BBL 2023-24 after making himself available for the team’s opening game against Melbourne Renegades on December 8.

After the first game, he will join the Australia Test squad to prepare for the three-match home Test series against Pakistan which is scheduled to get underway on December 14 in Perth. The Sixers are also hopeful the star will make himself available for the Sydney derby after the conclusion of the Test series against Pakistan.

Steve Smith played for the Sixers last season as well. He returned to the competition after missing the previous two seasons and made an instant impact with the bat. Opening the batting, the Australian superstar set the stage on fire with his extraordinary exploits with the bat. In just 5 innings, Steve Smith had scored 346 runs at a strike rate of 174.74 and had also smashed two centuries.

Steve Smith set to return to BBL:

While the international commitment will limit Steve Smith’s outing in the forthcoming season of the BBL, the Sixers have still signed him onto their list. And the star batter is set to play in their tournament opener against the Renegades at the SCG. He could be in line to return to the team for the game against Sydney Thunder on January 12.

“The impact that Steve was able to make in such a short time last season is testament to the kind of player he is,” Rachael Haynes, the head coach of Sydney Sixers, said. “We have no doubt Sixers fans can expect the same level of entertainment when he takes to the field again this summer.”

Steve Smith is currently in India, plying his trade in the ongoing five-match T20I series against the hosts. He scored a half-century in the first game before being dismissed for 19 in the second T20I as India won both games. In both the games, he opened the innings.
