Such a player is of no use: Virender Sehwag tears apart Sam Curran as PBKS suffer another defeat

Former India batsman Virender Sehwag came down hard on Sam Curran after Punjab Kings suffered yet another dismal defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024).

With Shikhar Dhawan sidelined due to an injury, Sam Curran has been leading PBKS from the last three games. The Punjab-based outfit has lost all the three games under the England allrounder's captaincy. In their latest outing, they suffered a three-wicket defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans on Sunday. 

Sam Curran won the toss and opted to bat first. PBKS' batters disappointed once again as GT reduced them to 99 for 7 before a crucial 40-run stand between Harpreet Brar and Harpreet Bhatia took them to a respectable total of 142. In reply, GT chased down the total inside 19 overs by losing seven wickets. The defeat was PBKS' sixth of the season in eight games and has all but ended their slim chances of qualifying for the playoffs.

Virender Sehwag slams Sam Curran:

Following PBKS' defeat, Virender Sehwag slammed Sam Curran for his performance. The PBKS captain scored 20 runs with the bat while opening the innings and picked up one wicket for 18 runs in two overs. Speaking to Cricbuzz, the former PBKS batsman stated that Curran is not making any notable contribution with either bat or ball for the team.

"I wouldn't keep Sam Curran as a batting all-rounder or a bowling all-rounder. Because such a player is of no use, who does some batting and some bowling. Either you win the game with your batting or win the game with your bowling. Either you hit the bullseye or you don't perform at all," said Sehwag.

Sam Curran in IPL 2024:

Sam Curran began his journey in IPL 2024 on a good note. In the first match of the season, he scored a fine match-winning fifty against Delhi Capitals. However, he has struggled to score big since then. In eight games so far, the T20 World Cup-winning allrounder has managed to score 153 runs.

Of those 153 runs, 63 came in the first game. With the ball, he has picked up 11 wickets although he has hardly made any match-winning impact. PBKS' next game is against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday (April 26). KKR are currently at the second spot in the points table with five wins from seven games while PBKS are languishing at the ninth spot with two wins and six defeats.
