Mohammed Shami ended with 24 wickets in the ICC World Cup 2023, the most by any bowler. What was an even more striking feature was that he took those wickets in just seven matches. The pacer made a terrific comeback after being benched from the first four games.

He took a fifer in his comeback game against New Zealand in Dharamsala and followed it up with a fou-wicket haul against England in Lucknow. India earned big victories in both those games against tough opposition.

Meanwhile, the Indian team have been a constant target from former Pakistan cricketers. They accused India of different things due to different reasons. One of them was the ICC favoring India by giving different balls that swung more. The man who pressed these charges on the team was former Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza.

Raza, in a Pakistan television show, alleged that the International Cricket Council had given a different set of balls to make sure India made more out of the conditions and the pitches than the rest of the 9 teams in the tournament.

Best Players Perform At The Right Time: Mohammed Shami

In response to the same, Mohammed Shami in a chat for Sportswear giant PUMA said: “I have been hearing during the World Cup even when I was not playing. When I started playing, I took 5 wickets, then in the next match 4, in the next match 5, a few Pakistan players were not able to digest it. What can I do?”

“In their mind, they think ‘we (our pacers) are the best’. I think the best are the players who perform at the right time. But you are trying to create controversy, keep on saying stuff that ‘ball is looking in a different colour, you are getting a different company’s balls, ICC has given you a different set of balls’. Sudhar jao yaar (Mend your ways)” he further said.

He further clarified that the India bowlers got the most movement and swing due to their own skill and hard work and not because of a particular ball. He further said that if the bowler executes the correct ball, he will get the right results.

“A lot of bowlers are there, but how is this man’s ball swinging that much? Hard work is there, determination is there, there is hard work and there is execution. If you execute in the right way, you will get results. I am not saying the others are not doing it right, but I am trying to execute my skills, set a target and achieve it.”

“I am praying that 10 other bowlers perform this way. I am never going to be jealous. If you learn to enjoy the success of other players, I think you have the chances ofbeboming a better player. The almighty is going to give whatever he wants to,” he added.

Shami ended the World Cup with 24 wickets, Jasprit Bumrah with 20 wickets, and Ravindra Jadeja finished with 16 wickets. Kuldeep Yadav also took 15 wickets.
