Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has implied that sacking Virat Kohli from ODI captaincy could work in his favor. With the bat in hand, Kohli has been going through a rough patch by his standards and this could be the motivation he needs.

Last week, the BCCI announced that Rohit Sharma will be the full-time ODI captain, thereby giving him full control of the white-ball teams. Although the decision was announced in a poor fashion, it might be the boost that Kohli needs to hit top form once again.

Gavaskar thinks the sacking might take the fans back to the Kohli of the olden days, particularly two years ago when he smashed centuries at will. “We may see the Virat from two years ago, slamming centuries after centuries,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

On the other hand, the captaincy promotion for Rohit Sharma could further amplify his run-scoring as well, Sunil Gavaskar said. The responsibility of being a captain means your shot selection automatically improves and that can happen with Rohit, as per Gavaskar.

We have also seen that when Rohit was made captain of Mumbai Indians, he took those scores of 20, 30, and 40 runs and converted them into big scores. When you are captain, you play with a lot more responsibilities. Your shot selection gets better. You know you have to set an example and MI reaped the benefits by winning the title five times. It is possible to see Rohit score even more runs once he is the white-ball captain,” Gavaskar said.

The opportunity for both Kohli and Rohit will present itself in the coming weeks when India begins its much-awaited tour of South Africa.
