“When he’s batting in the sheds he is always watching and thinking things through. Maybe it’s different personalities, but I see no reason why a bowler can’t be a captain,” he concluded.
Australia vs India 2018: I Don’t Think I Would Make a Very Good Captain - Pat Cummins
Updated - 01 Jan 2019, 07:18 PM
Australian cricket team fast bowler Pat Cummins, who was exceptional for Australia in the Boxing Day Test, feels that he would not be a very good captain. Meanwhile, Cummins was the only shining star for the hosts in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The 25-year-old claimed a terrific six-wicket haul in India’s second innings and scored 63 off 114 balls in Australia’s second innings. Despite his magical efforts, Pat Cummins failed to save his side from a 137-run defeat to go 1-2 down in the Border-Gavaskar Test series.
Cummins’ outstanding effort saw him jump to the third spot in the ICC Test Rankings and many, including spin legend Shane Warne felt he’s captaincy material. However, Cummins reckons he wouldn’t make a good leader.
“I think it’s pretty ridiculous at the moment,” Cummins said to cricket.com.au. “We’ve obviously got ‘Painey’ (Test skipper Tim Paine) at the moment who is doing a brilliant job and I think it’s his for a long time now. I feel like I’m too busy in the game bowling and when I’m batting putting all my effort into that.
And when I’m not doing it I’m usually off with the fairies trying to recover. So, I don’t think I would make a very good captain at the moment,” he added.
A pacer can be a good captain
After the ball-tampering scandal, new coach Justin Langer appointed Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh as the vice-captains. Pat Cummins said that a pacer can be a captain despite his bowling workload.
“I think someone like Josh Hazlewood at the moment has an enhanced role as vice-captain, he’s always thinking about the game when he’s out there fielding,” Cummins said.
