Former Indian coach Gary Kirsten and ex-opener W V Raman were on Thursday short-listed for the post of the women’s team coach. BCCI’s ad-hoc committee comprising former captain Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad, and Shantha Rangaswamy recommended the shortlisted names to the Board.

Moreover, there remains some uncertainty regarding the appointment of Gary Kirsten. The South African is not keen on giving up his plum job with Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, according to sources, efforts have been made to convince the former Indian National Cricket Team coach.

Meanwhile, 28 applicants were interviewed for the post

The shortlisted candidates from these 28 are former Indian pacer, Venkatesh Prasad. However, the others are Manoj Prabhakar, Trent Johnston, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Brad Hogg, and Kalpana Venkatachar. According to sources, three were interviewed in person, five candidates, including Gary Kirsten, on Skype and one over the phone.

Furthermore, it was under the supervision of Kirsten that India won the 2011 World Cup. He remained the head coach for India for three years from 2008-2011. After that, he coached South Africa from 2011-2013. He is currently the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Now, the BCCI is looking for a new coach for the women’s team, after Ramesh Power was removed from the duty last month. Interestingly, he again appeared for the interview again.

The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA), comprising chairman Vinod Rai and former India captain Diana Edulji, have been divided over the coach selection process. Eduji wanted Power to continue till the next tour to New Zealand starting next month. But, Rai told the BCCI to invite fresh applicant.

With the thing panning out as of now, WV Raman is likely to take over the prestigious role of the Indian Women’s Cricket team.
