One of the most famous cricket commentators, Harsh Bhogle, has raised his concern over Team India’s policy to play football in the practice sessions ahead of matches.

He raised the question when India all-rounder Washington Sundar got ruled out of the limited-overs tour of England. The off-spinner sustained an ankle injury and had to be limping off the field. Sundar got ruled out while playing football ahead of the two-match T20I series against Ireland.

Krunal Pandya was named as the replacement for Sundar in the T20I side while Axar Patel received a call-up in the 50-overs format. Sundar has been forced to miss the tour due to an injury. Playing football in practice sessions have not gone down well with Bhogle.

He stated he still cannot figure out what obsession it is among teams to play football during training sessions.

“Have to feel for young Washington Sundar. Injured playing football on a cricket tour! Never figured out this obsession with playing football!,” Bhogle wrote on his twitter handle.

Playing football has become more of a ritual among several cricket teams. The Indian side regularly plays football as a part of the practice session.

Football had earlier forced Rohit to miss his Test debut

Even in the past, players got injured while playing football which has forced them to miss matches.

Rohit Sharma was one such player who missed his Test debut after getting injured while playing a football match in 2010. India was slated to play South Africa, and Rohit got wounded on the morning of the Test.

In his place, Wriddhiman Saha went on to make his Test debut. Rohit eventually made his Test debut for India against the Windies in 2013.

After Asish Nehra made his comeback in the national team, he didn’t participate in the footballing session to prevent himself from sustaining any further injuries.

The Men in Blue is all set to take on England in a three-match T20I series starting Tuesday. The T20I series will be followed by as many ODI’s and five Tests. The Test series begins on August 1.
