Out of many modes of dismissals in cricket perhaps the most controversial is the Leg Before Wicket (LBW). The rule says that:  “Following an appeal by the fielding side, the umpire may rule a batsman out lbw if the ball would have struck the wicket, but was instead intercepted by any part of the batsman’s body (except the hand holding the bat). The umpire’s decision will depend on a number of criteria, including where the ball pitched, whether the ball hit in line with the wickets, and whether the batsman was attempting to hit the ball.”

After reading the rule one can understand how tough it is for the umpires to give the calls in a few seconds. There task, nevertheless, has been made easy by the introduction of the Decision Review System which allows the team to challenge the umpire’s verdict in case it is not satisfied with it.

Anyway, talking about this mode of dismissal, it is one of the most popular one in the game. The  lbw has helped the teams to win matches, given the bowlers a lot to celebrate while forcing the batsmen to become more careful in adopting a negative technique to avoid the ball hitting his pad.
