South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis feels he is still the best person to lead the country. Meanwhile, the Proteas suffered a humiliating whitewash against India losing the Test series 3-0. The team, which is going through a transition, will have to work hard to come out of this loss.

The visitors managed to score only two centuries compared to India’s three double hundreds and four tons. The statistics speak volumes as they suffered their first whitewash against India. The bowlers have also failed to pick 10 wickets in one innings throughout the Test series which justifies the outcome.

India dominated that entire series across the series. There were one-two moments for South Africa but they failed to cash in only to leave the match from the grip. However, this will be a learning curve for the young team out of which many came to India for the first team.

The recent drubbing raised speculations over Faf du Plessis’s leadership. But the cricketer feels that he is still the best person in the country to lead the team. Notably, Quinton de Kock led the side in the T20Is where they lost 2-0 after a washout in the first match.

Yeah, I still think (I’m the right person to lead South Africa),” Faf du Plessis said. “The same thing applies with this team. If you look it is a very very young team. How I see my journey unfolding with this team is to help their transition period,” he added.

Furthermore, Faf du Plessis drew reference from former skipper Graeme Smith and said that he also wants to ensure a smooth transition of the current outfit. In conclusion, du Plessis reinstated that he will continue to lead the team as of now.

“Graeme Smith was a successful captain for a very long time. And after that, there was like, okay what now? Who’s gonna captain this side? What’s gonna happen? So this period is important. It will try to make that (transition). Smith made that process a lot smoother identifying the next captains, working with them, and when’s the time is right (to quit), the time will be right. For the time being its just about that process unfolding. So as I said, it is a very young team, so for right now, yes (I will continue to lead),” du Plessis concluded.
