Ian Chappell Surprised With Rohit Sharma's Struggles In Tests

Former Australia skipper Ian Chappell has expressed his surprise over Rohit Sharma’s constant struggles in Test format.

Rohit Sharma’s contrasting performances in the limited-overs and Test cricket have left the entire cricketing world baffled. One of the finest cricketers of the white-ball, Rohit is surprisingly yet to cement his place in the Test team even after making his debut five years ago.

For a player of his calibre, the constant struggle in red-ball cricket can be embarrassing.  His Test career started with a bang. Drafted in the team for the series against Windies in 2013 which will be always remembered as the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s testimonial series, Rohit managed to steal the thunder for a while. In his first two innings, he slammed two centuries, becoming only the fifth batsman to do so.

However, those two terrific knocks were not the precursor of how his Test career would unfold. Even five years after making his Test debut, Rohit is yet to seal his spot in the team. Earlier this year, he lost his place in the Test side after the poor tour of South Africa. He could not find a spot in the Test side for the series against Afghanistan, England and West Indies.

And just like many, Ian Chappell is also perplexed at Rohit Sharma’s struggles in the longest format of the game.

“Rohit has three doubles in ODI. One of them was 264, you need to have amazing skills to play such inning in a 50-over game. But, I don’t know why he couldn’t take this form into the longer format. But, he is a great player,” Ian Chappell said while commentating on Sports Flashes Cricket.

Rohit, meanwhile, has found a spot in the Test side for the upcoming series against Australia. The right-hander will be looking to justify the faith shown in him and seal his spot in the team.
