Team India head coach Ravi Shastri showered praises on Prithvi Shaw for an utterly dominating knock against Windies in his debut Test today at the Saurashtra Cricket Stadium in Rajkot. Taking to his Instagram handle, Shastri shared a picture of Shaw celebrating his century with a motivating caption. “Well played young man @prithvishaw for a free and fearless performance on debut. A bit of Viru and the Master there #INDvsWI,” Shastri wrote.

It was a special knock from the 18-year-old debutant as he stormed his way to a breathtaking century of just 99 deliveries. He never looked overawed with the prospect of this being his first Test. Prithvi only gained from strength to strength. In the process, he resembled quite a bit of the flair of Sehwag and the resilience of Sachin Tendulkar. It was the only reason why even India’s head coach compared his strokeplay with Tendulkar and Sehwag.

After batting first, India lost the wicket of KL Rahul in the very first over of the match. However from there on it was a utter domination by the hosts courtesy Prithvi Shaw and Cheteshwar Pujara. Prithvi struck some gorgeous shots on the up and looked a class batsman at work. He became the youngest Indian batsman to score a century in his Test debut. In the process, Prithvi became the 15th Indian to score a century on Test debut.

The teenager was quite severe on Devendra Bishoo and struck some exceptional shots with utter disdain. It was wonderful strokeplay at its very best. He swept and cut to perfection and was at complete ease at the Test level. In the after match interview, he revealed about being nervous but the nerves eased out after he faced 40-50 deliveries.

He was eventually dismissed on 134 after facing 154 deliveries. His innings was studded with 19 fours. It was a pretty soft dismissal especially from a point of view of a batsman who was already batting on 134. Captain Virat Kohli scored an impressive half-century and shared a good partnership with Ajinkya Rahane. The latter was eventually dismissed before the end of the day’s play. India finished on 364/4 with Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant at the crease.
