No team has paid a bigger price for the stubbornness of zinger bails this season than Ajinkya Rahane-led Rajasthan Royals. Not once but the Royals have paid a big price twice in just five games this season. The first one came against Chennai Super Kings last week when MS Dhoni got a reprieve while batting on zero. Jofra Archer’s delivery had hit the stumps after coming off Dhoni’s pads but the bails did not fall.  Dhoni had later gone on to score an unbeaten 75, helping Super Kings beat Royals by 14 runs.

On Sunday, the Royals were at the receiving end again, this time against Kolkata Knight Riders. After posting just 139, the Royals needed a solid start but could not get it. Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine blasted 36 runs from the first three overs itself. However, the fourth over could have potentially changed the course of the game.

Both the Knight Riders openers had departed on successive deliveries in that over but luck deserted Royals.

On the first ball of the Dhawal Kulkarni over, Rahul Tripathi missed a regulation catch to give Narine a reprieve. On the very next delivery, Kulkarni managed to breach Lynn’s defence and the ball went on to hit the stumps but the bails did not come off. Royals went on to lose the game by 8 wickets with both Lynn and Narine starring with the bat. While Narine slammed 47, Lynn scored 50 as the Knight Riders chased down the total with 37 balls remaining.

After the incident, Ajinkya Rahane was seen having a discussion with the umpires. He has now revealed that he wanted the ball to be declared dead which went for four byes.

“The rules are the rules, but I told the umpires, ‘at least don’t give it as a boundary’. Already the T20 format is so tough for bowlers, and if you get such a situation, at least that ball can be a dead ball,” he said.

“That was my conversation with the umpires. But see, there is nothing to be gained from brooding about whatever is not in our control,” added Ajinkya Rahane.

The Royals have now lost 4 of their opening five games and will need a herculean effort to turn things around if they are eyeing the playoffs.
