IPL 2019: Over 1000 Cricketers Register For the Mega Auctions

The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions will see as many as 1003 players going up for sale, including 232 overseas cricketers. With 70 spots available for grabs, the list includes 800 uncapped cricketers – 746 from India for 2019 IPL.

Meanwhile, one player each from Hong Kong, Ireland, Netherlands and USA have also registered for the auctions. Among foreign countries, South Africa have the maximum number of entrants (59). Australia (35) occupies the second spot while Windies (33) sits on the third. In addition to, Afghanistan has also seen a massive boost, with 27 players registering for the auction.

Sri Lanka (28), New Zealand (17), England (14), Bangladesh (10) and Zimbabwe (5) are the other countries that have seen registrations.

However, for the first time in the history of IPL, Richard Madley won’t be the auctioneer. IPL will have a new gavel master in Hugh Edmeades, an independent fine art, classic car, and charity auctioneer.

The franchises will have to send their shortlist of players within 5:00 pm on December 10 (Monday). Jaipur, the pink city of India, will host the mega auctions of the cash-rich league on December 18 (Tuesday) and it will be a one-day affair. Previously, the auctions took place over two days. Representatives of the eight franchises will be briefed about the entire proceedings a day prior to the auction.

The eight franchises have a total available purse of Rs 145.25 crore. While Chennai Super Kings needs just to fill in two spots (both Indians), Kings XI Punjab has 15 slots available (11 Indians, four overseas players)–the highest among the franchises.

Mumbai Indians will look to fill just one overseas spot while Knight Riders can buy the maximum number of overseas players – five.
