Sri Lanka, led by Thisara Perera, won the toss and chose to bowl first but the decision completely backfired for the tourists as the hosts won the match by 89 runs. Batting first India scored 260/5 courtesy Rohit Sharma’s joint fastest T20 century in just 35 deliveries. Rohit Sharma scored 118 runs which is now the highest score by an Indian batsman in T20 international. He was equally accompanied by opener KL Rahul who scored 89 runs. The two openers were involved in a 165 runs partnership.

All the Sri Lankan bowlers were hammered to all parts of the ground. Angelo Matthews walked off the field after bowling just 2.2 overs after a pulled hamstring and did not come out to bat as well. Captain Thisara Perera picked up two wickets giving away 49 runs.

While batting Kusal Perera scored a brilliant 37 ball 77 runs, but his knock went in vain as the Sri Lankans lost their last eight wickets for just 25 runs. Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers again in the match as he picked up four wickets for 52 runs in his four overs whereas Kuldeep Yadav picked up three wickets for the same amount of runs. Sri Lanka scored 172/9 as Matthews was absent hurt.

Here is what Sri Lanka’s captain Thisara Perera said at the post-match presentation.

 “It’s a tough series for us. Too big a target to chase. Tharanga and Kusal batted very well, giving us momentum, but others couldn’t execute. Mathews is now out of the series due to his hamstring problem.”
