Off late, Mankading has become a regular headliner in the game of cricket. Opinions have been divided on the controversial dismissal, as a few cricketers call it a poor act in the gentleman game while a few believe it is a useful method to keep the non-striker inside the crease. Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood of Australia said that he would use it for Cheteshwar Pujara when he visits Australia later this year.

The conversation took place during Cricket Australia awards where David Warner and Ellyse Perry were honoured in respective categories. The topic came up after an Afghanistan bowler Noor Ahmad Lakanwal had Mankaded Pakistan batsman Mohammad Huraira in the ICC Under-19 World Cup.

I’ll save that one for Cheteshwar Pujara – Josh Hazlewood

Australian women’s cricketer Meg Lanning and Men’s bowler Hazlewood were both asked of their take on the Mankad law during the chat. In reply, Mag Lanning said “I hope I don’t find myself in that situation.” On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood said: “I reckon I’ll save that one for the next time at Pujara.”

Recently, during ICC T20I World Cup 2020, Ahmad ran Huraira out on the non-striker’s end after he was caught outside the crease by the Chinaman spinner before releasing the ball. He appealed instantly and the batsman was adjudged out to once again spark the debate around whether the dismissal and the actions of the bowlers are in line with the spirit of cricket.

As per the laws of the game, “if the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out.”

In the IPL 2019 season, Ravichandran Ashwin had dismissed England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler during a Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) match. After that, he was heavily criticised for the poor act of sportsmanship.
