MS Dhoni Groomed Someone Like Virat Kohli, He Is A Legend: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar hailed MS Dhoni for his contribution to the game as a ‘legend’. Apart from leading India to major ICC triumphs, MS Dhoni also groomed the spinners from behind the stumps and someone like Virat Kohli, who took over the captaincy for him.

MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket mid-way in 2014 Australia Test allowing Virat Kohli to take the captain’s armband. Later, in 2017, his quit as a captain from the limited-overs. However, till the day MS Dhoni was playing, he was always the go-to man for his teammates including Kohli for his sheer understanding of the game.

Gavaskar said that Dhoni is an absolute legend and their is no doubt about it. He also applauded the way he has led Indian cricket team over the years apart from grooming the cricketers under him.

“Absolutely, there is no question about it (him being a legend). What he has achieved in cricket certainly makes him a legend. The way he has captained India, the way he has groomed youngsters, the way he has groomed not just batsmen not just leaders, he has groomed somebody like a Virat Kohli under him, look at the way he has groomed spinners,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“That certainly makes him a legend. Because his contribution has been beyond the field. He is somebody, when you talk about leaders in all walks of life, his name will always come up there.”

 Dhoni made a big name for himself by making the country proud with his achievements after coming from the cricketing backwaters of Ranchi. He has achieved immense success as a player and also grew up to be one of the most successful captains and achieved almost everything the ICC tournaments had to offer.

All the success had made him one of the most influential person on the cricketing circuit but he was not the same when he was first introduced to the national team. Besides that, MS Dhoni has also been the go-to man for his teammates whenever he was on the field.

Dhoni understood the game well. He knew the strength of the side and backs his players accordingly. He did not takes any kind of frivolous decisions and likes to maintain his calm. It is due to these qualities Dhoni came up as one of the most calm and composed character on the cricket field
