MS Dhoni is undoubtedly the most decorated skipper in the history of Indian cricket. It all started as an experiment and ended as one of the biggest masterstrokes in the games. A lot of eyebrows were raised when MS Dhoni was asked to lead the side in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 ahead of the likes of Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh.

However, it did not take MS Dhoni long to prove his naysayers wrong and show the world what to expect from him. He led the team to the title against all the odds and there was no looking back since then. Few months later, he was given the captaincy of the team across formats and Dhoni went on to exceed all the expectations.

Under him, India rose to the pinnacle of ICC Test Rankings for the very first time in 2009. Two years later, India won the coveted World Cup after a long wait of 28 years before winning the Champions Trophy in 2013. Till date, Dhoni is the only captain to have won all the three ICC tournaments.

Moments close to heart:

MS Dhoni has enjoyed uncountable special moments in his illustrious playing career. However, the two moments that are closest to his heart are the rousing reception his team received after its triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup. Dhoni recalled those two historic wins during a promotional event on Wednesday.

“There are two incidents I would like to mention over here. So after the 2007 (T20) World Cup, we came back to India and had an open bus ride and we were standing at the Marine Drive (in Mumbai). It was jam-packed all around and people had come out of their cars,” said Dhoni.

“So, I felt good after seeing the smile on everyone’s face. Because, there could have been so many people in the crowd, who might have missed their flights, perhaps they were going for important work. The kind of reception, we got, the entire Marine Drive was full from one end to other,” he added.

The other moment which he listed was the chants of “Vande Mataram” by the fans when India were close to victory in the 2011 World Cup final. Dhoni had remained unbeaten on 91 in the all-important game as India beat Sri Lanka to become the first team to win a World Cup on home soil.

“And the second instance I would say the 2011 World Cup final, in that match when 15-20 runs were required, the way all the spectators started chanting Vande Mataram’ at the Wankhede Stadium.

“These are two moments, I think, it will be very difficult to replicate them. Those are the two moments that are very close to my heart,” said Dhoni.
