Ricky Ponting Reveals Who Gave Him The Nickname Punter And Why

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting held a question-answer session on Twitter on Monday and as expected it turned out to be an interesting one. The questions ranged from his own career to present day cricket as well as some other unknown secrets of his life. And one such question was who gave him his famous nickname Punter.

The legendary batsman is fondly called Punter but very few know the reason behind it. Well, Ricky Ponting finally revealed the name of his ex-teammate who called him Punter for the first time and also revealed the reason behind it. Ricky Ponting revealed that the nickname was given to him by spin legend Shane Warne, while they were a part of the Australian Cricket Academy.

Ricky Ponting’s liking for dog races and betting on them prompted Shane Warne to give him the nickname Punter. He revealed the secret on Twitter, writing:

“We were getting paid $40 a month when we were living at the cricket academy in 1990. I used to go to the TAB to have a bet on the dogs and
@ShaneWarne gave me the nickname”

Meanwhile, both Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne will be soon seen in action when they lead the two teams in a charity game on February 8. The game is being played to help the victims of the Australian bushfire.Along with them,  Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Justin Langer, Michael Clarke, Shane Watson and Alex Blackwell will also take part.

Recently, Yuvraj Singh and Wasim Akram also confirmed their availability for the match. Sachin Tendulkar and Courtney Walsh will also be associated with the game but as a coach. Tendulkar will coach Ponting’s side while Walsh will coach Warne’s team.
