Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have brought new innovations to domestic cricket making it mandatory to field a leg-spinner and an overseas pacer who bowls over 140 kmph in every game in the T20 tournament. They also made it mandatory to bowl a leg-spinner for four overs in the Bangladesh Premier League which didn’t go well with the all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and the cricketer slammed the administrative body.

The move recently came into force as Bangladesh have lacked in international cricket due to lack of quality leg-spinners in their senior team. The lack of domestic match practice for batsmen against leg-spin was also one of the reasons as Rashid Khan tore apart Bangladesh in the recent series. Recently BCB even sacked two coaches for not fielding in their respective playing XIs in the National Cricket League.

BCB on October 18 (Friday) confirmed that they have withdrawn two coaches after failing to field a leg-spinner. Dhaka failed to field leg-spinner Jubair Hossain while Khulna ignored Rishad Hossain in their recent first-round domestic matches. Speaking on the developments, Shakib Al Hasan said that the move comes as a surprise to include leg-spinners mandatorily in BPL.

“For so many years we couldn’t select a legspinner for the senior team, but suddenly we made plans to include seven legspinners in the BPL,” Shakib told the Bengali daily Samakal. “This decision does come as a bit of a surprise, but I would still state that the board has taken a decision that it thinks is good. I think that legspinners should bowl a lot of overs in first-class cricket to gain confidence and consistency. The BPL is an international-standard competitive tournament where you will face scenarios that you are likely to face in international cricket. You share the dressing room with overseas cricketers. It is not the place to make a player,” he added.

Furthermore, Shakib Al Hasan made serious claims that he feels Bangladeshi players are being suppressed in their country. He also said that everyone has the right to decide where he wants to play and at what price.

Shakib will lead his country in the upcoming three-match series against India. It will be an uphill task for them to go past against a dominant Indian side.

“I always get a feeling that cricketers in our country are being suppressed. This is not right. Everyone should have equal opportunity. A player should be left to earn what he feels he deserves. If the team doesn’t want to take the player at that payment, the player will deal with it. But to stop him from [freely naming his price] is not right,” he concluded.
