Senior cricketer Smriti Mandhana has been centre to rise of women’s cricket in India and continues to inspire the next generation of cricketers. Women’s cricket in the country has taken large strides in the past few years. Under the mentorship of WV Raman, the India women’s cricket team reached their maiden World Cup final in 2017 and also sealed a berth in the summit clash of the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup.

However, some still continue to stereotype women in the country, even in a situation when these women have proved they are not meant for household chores and can achieve plenty of success in whichever field they choose to represent. Mandhana recently opened up about her chat with India captain Virat Kohli where he gave her some inspiring advice on how to develop the sports culture.

“He told me that your team (women’s team) can do something in India which the men’s team cannot do, that is to change the culture for women in India,” Mandhana told Guha, during a BBC podcast ‘The Doosra’.

“Whenever you feel like missing a gym session, just think that you can actually inspire a generation of women in India to take up sports not only cricket,” added Mandhana.

Mandhana last featured for India in the women’s T20 World Cup. She was not in good form in the tournament but continues to be one of the integral part of the side. The 25-year-old also believes the team has gelled up as an unit and grown up better under the coaching of WV Raman.
