Team India's Batting Coach Candidates And Their Experience

The BCCI will be interviewing candidates for the batting coach job tomorrow and in all likeliness, team India will get a new coach. Sanjay Bangar, the assistant coach cum batting coach, is unlikely to get his contract renewed and there could be a case when India might get a new batting coach. Before the board announces a new coach, here’s a look at candidates for the batting coach job.

Vikram Rathour:

Vikram Rathour, BCCI

The former India batsman has had coaching stints with Punjab and Himachal Pradesh cricket team. An experienced campaigner, Rathour played six Tests and seven ODIs from 1996 to 1997. In domestic cricket, he played for Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. He also played 146 first-class and 99 List A matches.

Lalchand Rajput:

One of the candidates for head coach post as well, Rajput was associated with team India as manager during T20 World Cup in 2007. Later, he coached Mumbai Indians in IPL.

He is presently the coach of Zimbabwe and was Afghanistan’s coach when they were awarded Test status. Recently, Rajput coached Winnipeg Hawks, who won the second edition of Global T20 Canada.

Pravin Amre:

Regarded as one of the finest coaches in Indian cricket, Amre has coached India U-19, Pune Warriors India and is currently working with USA and Delhi Capitals in IPL. He has also coached Mumbai in domestic cricket. Under Amre, India U-19 won the junior World Cup in 2012.

Many cricketers including Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Robin Uthappa have personally worked with Amre before making their India comebacks. He is one of the strongest candidates for the job.

Thilan Samaraweera:

The former Sri Lankan batsman has worked as the batting coach of Sri Lanka. Recently, New Zealand roped him as their consultant for the ongoing two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

Samaraweera has also worked with the Australian team as their consultant before Sri Lanka visited the country in 2016.

Hrishikesh Kanitkar:

Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Tamil Nadu

A regular coach in domestic cricket, Kanitkar has worked with Goa and Tamil Nadu. Under him, Vijay Shankar-led Tamil Nadu defeated Bengal in the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2016/17.

Kanitkar has also worked with Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL, working with them as their assistant coach. He played 34 ODIs and two Tests for India.

Amol Mazumdar:

A legend of Indian domestic cricket, Mazumdar has an experience of coaching Rajasthan Royals for two seasons. He was roped in by the franchise as its batting coach before IPL 2018.

Mazumdar played for Mumbai and Andhra Pradesh, where he was also the mentor. He has also worked as the batting consultant of Netherlands.

J Arun Kumar:

The former Karnataka veteran batsman has worked with Karnataka and Kings XI Punjab in IPL. Under him, Karnataka won back to back Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup and Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was recently appointed as the coach of Puducherry.

Mark Ramprakash:

He was recently the batting coach of England. Ramprakash joined the team in 2014 and stayed with them till the start of 2019, before it was announced that he will not be coaching them going into World Cup and Ashes. Ramprakash has also coached Middlesex in country cricket.

Shiv Sundar Das:

The former India batsman has an experience of coaching Odisha, a team that he joined as coach before 2017/18 season. He played 23 Tests, in which he scored 1326 runs. He also played four ODIs. In total, he played 180 first-class and 81 List A matches.

Jonathan Trott:

One of the finest batsmen for England, Trott played 52 Tests and 68 ODIs. He retired from international cricket in 2015 and from the game in 2018. Few months back, he joined Kent as their coach.

The present batting coach of the Indian team, Bangar is not expected to retain his job primarily due to the fact that team India could not find a suitable number four batsman after 2017.

Bangar did well during his stint and was also elevated to the post of assistant coach in 2017. He had joined team India’s backroom staff in 2014, along with Ravi Shastri on the tour of England.

Mithun Manhas:

The former Delhi batsman has an experience of coaching Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL. He had joined RCB before IPL 2019.

The veteran cricketer also coached Delhi in the previous domestic season. He played for the state for 17 years and later joined Jammu and Kashmir. He has played for India A, Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors India and Chennai Super Kings.
