India’s impressive win over New Zealand in the first T20 International at the Feroz Shah Kotla was of special importance as it was the Men in Blue’s first win against the Kiwis in the shortest format of the game. However, the stat took the back seat for the better part of the evening as everyone present in the ground was cheering for veteran fast-bowler Ashish Nehra who was playing his last international game.

The left-arm pacer, who made his debut way back in 1999, went wicketless, conceding 29 runs in his four overs, but that was absolutely secondary as his teammates and the fans were firmly focused on giving him a fitting farewell. He was presented with a memento by former and current India skippers MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli respectively before delighting the crowd which also had his family in attendance by bowling in an Indian jersey for one last time. What was even memorable that the end from which he was bowling was rechristened as the Ashish Nehra End as he became just the second bowler after England’s James Anderson to bowl from an end named after him.

After the game, Nehra was given a lap of honour by his teammates as he bowed out of the game in front of his home crowd. Post the win, Kohli took to Twitter to congratulate the team on a good performance before leaving a heartwarming message for Nehra.

“Another good win and a complete team performance. ??? Wishing Ashish bhaiya all the luck for everything in the future. It’s been an honor sharing the field and the dressing room with you. ?? @BCCI #INDvNZ #NehraJi,” the captain tweeted.

Coming to the game, India thrashed New Zealand by 53 runs to go one nil up in the three match series. Batting first, India rode on half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to post a mammoth 202 for 3 before restricting Kane Williamson & Co. to 149 for 8.
