With the auction for the forthcoming Indian Premier League just over a week away, all the franchises must have been planning meticulously to zero in the players they would like to buy and Kings XI Punjab are not an exception either.

Barring the second place finish in 2014 and the semifinal appearance in the inaugural season, the Punjab-based franchise had not managed to progress from the league stage in the other eight seasons. That they are now desperate to change their fortunes is very much clear, as they will play the next season with a completely different squad, having retained just one player, Axar Patel from their last season.

As of now, only rumours have surfaced regarding the players the franchises want to buy the Kings XI Punjab fans can see some of the biggest players from the state plying their trades for the club. Former India opener Virender Sehwag, who is also the director of cricketer at the club, hinted that the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh can be bought by the team.

“I think the fans would want Punjab stars like Yuvraj and Harbhajan Singh in the Kings XI team,” Sehwag told The Times of India.

Both Yuvraj and Harbhajan have been released by their respective franchises. Yuvraj, who was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, had plied his trade for Kings XI Punjab in the first three seasons while Harbhajan Singh was released by Mumbai Indians after being with the franchise for the last ten seasons.

The former swashbuckling opener also said that Yuvraj Singh can still return to the Indian team.

“He’s not in the Indian team, but Yuvraj is still an amazing player. His talent is intact. Even a current India player can lose form. I don’t think we’ll get a player like him again. If his form his good, he’s a match-winner,” said Sehwag.

The 39-year old went on to say that the likes of Ben Stokes, Dwayne Bravo and Mitchell Starc will be in demand during the auction and also tipped the England allrounder to bag a whopping deal.

“Ben Stokes, Dwayne Bravo and Mitchell Starc are the international players everyone wants. I won’t be surprised if Stokes goes for around $1.5 million. I expect the capped India players to fetch around Rs 10-12cr too. Among the uncapped players, Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda would be in demand,” he opined.

The former Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab star went on to say that no team is ‘small’ in the IPL before expressing his delight over having the biggest purse to spend.

“There isn’t any small team in the IPL, the purse size (Rs 80 cr) stays the same for all and everyone will try to spend their entire purse. In fact, in this year’s auction, the best part is that we and Rajasthan Royals have the most amount of money to spend,” he said.

“However, we’re called a ‘small’ team because we don’t have ‘big’ players. In 2014, we had a team with not too many star players, but we reached the final using a limited purse. Our aim this time is to spend money to buy many Indian players,” he added.

Meanwhile, the auction will take place on January 27 and 28 in Bengaluru.
