Yuvraj Singh’s career is ending in a way that not many would have anticipated. One of the biggest stars of Indian cricket in the last decade, Yuvraj is hailed as one of India’s greatest match-winners.

The left-handed batsman’s career was set for a fairy-tale ending. He was the architect of two of India’s greatest triumphs in the history – World T20 and World Cup. The southpaw had taken the onus on himself to end country’s long wait for a World Cup.

Match after match; he was churning out performances that inched the country closer to the trophy. But little did everyone know that with every passing day he was putting his life at stake. A giant tumour, eventually 15cm x 11cm x 13 cm was growing within the southpaw and was pressing against a lung and artery. The toast of the nation couldn’t sleep, was finding it tough to breathe.

However, he overcame all the ordeals to guide India to the coveted title in 2011. However, that happiness soon turned into despair when he was diagnosed with cancer, ten months after the monumental feat at the Wankhede.

But the fighter he is, he came out unscathed in the fight against cancer too. The signature pick-up flicks, and lofted drives were once again on full display. However, he lost the consistency that had made him one of the most feared batsmen in the world.

He was recalled to the ODI team last year but lost his place following some indifferent performances. In the twilight stage of his career, Yuvraj is now finding it tough to break into the team again. While it is not the kind of end Yuvraj would have wanted after enjoying unparalleled success, he said he wants to retire on his terms. The 36-year old said he is still good for two-three seasons of IPL.

“I don’t want to leave the game with any regret, thinking I should have played for some more years. Want to go when I feel it is the right time to go when I feel I have done my best and I could not have done any more than this. I am still playing because I am enjoying playing cricket, not just because I have to play for India or I have to play the IPL. The motivation is definitely to play for India. I feel two or three IPLs are left in me,” he told Sportstar Live.

He further said he wants to support those who are battling cancer.

“The journey has been nice. I have been a fighter, taking on tough situations. I like being a pillar of strength to people, for those suffering from cancer or going through other issues in life. Want to be known as someone who never gave up. Whether I play for India or not, I will give my 100 per cent on the field,” he said.
