Chris Gayle lauds Yashasvi Jaiswal as he dismisses Ben Duckett's ‘we should take credit for India’s aggressive cricket’ remark

Former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle responded to Ben Duckett’s remarks, suggesting that Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive batting style was inspired by “Bazball”. Gayle emphasized that an attacking style of cricket existed even before his international career began.

Ben Duckett attributed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s remarkable batting performance to England’s aggressive approach in recent years. The England opener stated that they should take credit for Jaiswal’s outstanding performance, highlighting his team’s impact on players.

Attacking Cricket Has Been Played For Years – Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle highlighted that attacking cricket has long been a part of the sport’s history, citing legends like Viv Richards and Brian Lara as examples. Gayle credited Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s natural talent and style to his mentor rather than external influences.

“Attacking cricket has been played for years, even before Chris Gayle actually set foot on the international scene as well. We (the West Indies) had the likes of Viv Richards, those guys set it (up) for us…Brian Lara, those guys are attacking players in all formats as well. When you actually check their stats, do check how they went about their innings,” said Gayle.

“I don’t think he (Jaiswal) learned it from England. That style of play he developed with his coach and mentor (Jwala Singh). He’s just phenomenal. It’s like the guy has been playing for 20 years, unbelievable. I just hope he can keep it up,” he added.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been in red-hot form in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. The southpaw smashed two double centuries in the first three matches. He scored 618 runs in seven innings with an outstanding average of 103 and a strike rate of 78.32.

The left-handed batter became the second Indian opener to score more than 600 runs in a bilateral Test series after Sunil Gavaskar. The 22-year-old played a crucial role in securing a 2-1 lead despite suffering a disappointing loss in the series opener in Hyderabad.

Chris Gayle cautioned against altering Yashasvi Jaiswal’s natural technique and aggressive approach. The former opener expressed hope that the young batsman would maintain his attacking style both in Tests and T20s.

“A lot will be expected of him as he goes on but they should just let him continue to flow. He’s an attacking player, you see that in his T20 cricket as well…That’s in his nature as well and they shouldn’t try to curb him or try to change him,” said Gayle.

The young cricketer notched a remarkable 171 runs in his Test debut against the West Indies. Jaiswal has scored 934 runs in just eight Tests at an impressive average of 71.84 with a strike rate of 69. He has hit three centuries and three half-centuries in his career so far.

Jaiswal continued his excellent form in the ongoing fourth Test match against England in Ranchi. The opening batter scored 73 runs off 117 deliveries, including 8 boundaries and a six. However, he failed to convert his half-century into a big score in India’s first innings.
