Indian captain Rohit Sarma is on the verge of breaking former wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni’s record in the upcoming third Test match against England. Rohit Sharma needs just two more sixes to surpass MS Dhoni’s tally for the most sixes in Indian Test history.

Rohit Sharma made his international debut in 2007 and went on to establish himself as one of the finest batters in white-ball cricket. The right-handed batter cemented his place in Tests after transitioning to opener. He became India’s Test team captain in February 2022.

The 36-year-old is leading the Indian team in the ongoing five-match Test series against the England team. The home team suffered a disappointing loss in the first match in Hyderabad. However, they bounced back with a victory in the second game to level the series.

Rohit Sharma On Verge Of Breaking MS Dhoni’s Record

Rohit Sharma is poised to break MS Dhoni’s record in the third Test match. He requires two more sixes to surpass MS Dhoni and become the second-highest six-hitter in Indian Test history. The Indian skipper has amassed 3827 runs in 56 Tests at a decent average of 38.09.

Virender Sehwag currently leads the chart with 90 sixes in 103 matches for India in red-ball cricket. MS Dhoni has smashed 78 sixes in 90 matches, securing the second position. Sachin Tendulkar is in fourth place with 69 maximums to his name in Test cricket.

Hold The Words Of MS Dhoni – Sanjay Manjrekar

Rohit Sharma has struggled to find his form in red-ball cricket, failing to score a fifty in his last eight Test innings. He has scored 90 runs across four innings against England, with a best score of 39 runs. He has also failed to make an impact with the bat in South Africa.

Sanjay Manjrekar advised Rohit Sharma to prioritize his batting over captaincy, urging him to focus on the process instead of becoming overly animated during dismissals. The former Indian cricketer also suggested Rohit hold onto the words of MS Dhoni.

“I just wonder whether Rohit Sharma is getting too caught up in trying to make an impact as a leader. It’s got to be Rohit Sharma the batter first and then the captain because when you’re captain, most things are beyond your control,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.

“Try and do the right things and hold the words of MS Dhoni. You do the process and wait for things to happen, but batting is something that’s within his control very much,” he continued.

Over the past few years, Rohit Sharma has showcased remarkable batting performances, particularly in home Test matches. He scored 368 runs in four Tests against England in 2021 and 242 runs in four Tests against Australia during the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

He will be next seen in action during the third Test match against the Ben Stokes-led side at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, starting on February 15. The ongoing red ball series is currently evenly poised at 1-1.
