Indian batting stalwart and former captain Virat Kohli after opting out of the first two Tests against England in Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam, has opted to remain out of the next 3 Test as well, meaning he is set to miss the entire 5-match Test series against the Three Lions in what was the first red-ball series at home in 2024 and the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

Virat Kohli had reasoned personal issues to Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and the team management to miss the first two matches which the BCCI addressed in a press release before the start of the series.

And now as the BCCI announced India’s squad for the remaining 3 matches, the apex cricketing body stated, “Virat Kohli will remain unavailable for selection for the remainder of the series due to personal reasons. The Board fully respects and supports Mr. Kohli’s decision.”

This will be for the first time in his 13-year long Test career that that the 35-year-old has opted to miss an entire Test series. He has regarded red-ball cricket as his favorite format but as the BCCI said, certain issues do require full and undivided attention and that is what exactly the case is with the batting stalwart.

Back in 2020/21 during the 4-match Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia, Virat Kohli who was the Test captain back then, had to leave the series after the 1st Test where the Indians suffered the most humiliating Test match losses ever by 8 wickets in the Pink Ball, day-night match.

After registering 244 in the 1st innings, India were bowled out for just 36 runs in the 2nd innings, leaving just 90 runs as the target to chase. At that time, Kohli left because he was expecting his first child Vamika with wife and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma.

Following Virat Kohli’s departure, veteran Ajinkya Rahane was handed over the captaincy and he led the Indian team towards a shocking series win by 2-1 in the most exciting of situations. Certainly, India once again find themselves in a similar situation without their star batter who could have entered the elite 30 Test centurions list.

But nonetheless, Rohit Sharma’s men have a task to carry out and it will be interesting to see who comes in at number 5 as the number 4 slot will be filled up by KL Rahul.
