Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Wasim Jaffer has said that the premier India pacer Jasprit Bumrah can take inspiration from the legendary India captain MS Dhoni ahead of his first assignment as India Test captain.

On Thursday, June 30 the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced that the India captain Rohit Sharma has failed to recover from Covid-19 and he has been ruled out of the Test match against England and Jasprit Bumrah will be leading India in the Test match with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.

Bumrah will become only the second fast bowler to captain India after legendary Kapil Dev, who last led India in 1987. Also, he will become the 36th captain to lead India in Test cricket.

Notably, Bumrah’s first assignment as a skipper of the Indian Test team will be overall his first assignment as a skipper in cricket as he has not captained in any First-class, List A or Indian Premier League match before.

Meanwhile, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer took to Twitter to assert that Bumrah should take inspiration from Dhoni, who also had no prior experience of leading a team before leading India and he went on to become one of the greatest skippers of all time.

“Congratulations and good luck to @Jaspritbumrah93 you can take inspiration from the fact that last Indian who captained the country before leading in FC/List A/IPL ended up taking India to no.1 Test ranking and winning 3 ICC trophies #ENGvIND,” Jaffer wrote in a tweet.

Speaking ahead of the rescheduled Test against England, Bumrah recalled his chat with MS Dhoni and talked about drawing inspiration from the legendary India captain ahead of his captaincy debut.

“The taste of success feels good when there is pressure. I am always up for responsibilities and I love to be in tough challenges. As a cricketer, you always want to test yourself in deep waters. I have spoken to many cricketers. Everybody improves and keep getting better,” Bumrah told the press on the eve of the game.

“I remember speaking to MS (Dhoni), and he told me that he never captained any side before he led India for the first time. Now, he is remembered as one of the most successful captains of all time.

“So, I am focusing on how I can help the team and not focusing on what I have done before or how the cricketing conventions or the rules have been set.”

The 5th and last Test match of the series between India and England, which was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 scare in the Indian camp, will be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham from Friday, July 1.
