While most expected Rishabh Pant to open the innings since the left-hander had opened twice in India’s most recent T20I series against England, a few eyebrows were raised when Suryakumar Yadav walked out to open the batting for India with captain Rohit Shama in the first T20I against West Indies at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad.

When asked why India chose to open with Suryakumar in the series opener, veteran India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered an astounding response, perhaps joining the group of people who were astonished. Bhuvneshwar, who has joined the team after sitting out the ODI portion of the tour, said he doesn’t fully understand the decision-making process but is confident that the skipper and the head coach must have put a thought process behind it.

Rahul Dravid And Rohit Sharma Must Have Done Deep Thinking While Sending Suryakumar Yadav To Open The Innings: Bhuvneshwar Kumar

“I really don’t know. Itna pata hai ki zaroor kuch thought process Raha Hoga (All I know is that there must have been some thought process behind it). It surely wasn’t random. I’m sure whatever the coach and captain want to achieve something out of this. Honestly, I don’t know what exactly was the thought process behind it but I’m sure there must’ve been some deep thinking,” Bhuvneshwar said when asked about the thought process behind sending Surya at the top of the order in a virtual press conference ahead of the 2nd T20I.

Unfortunately, although having a good beginning, Suryakumar was unable to seize the chance. After 16 balls and a score of 24, he got out.

In their most recent T20I series, India has been tinkering with its batting lineup, particularly the top order. The five-match T20I home series against South Africa had started with Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad. In the ensuing two Ireland T20Is, Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson served as Kishan’s partners.
