GT vs RR: The Eden Is Not My Home; I'm Here To Play An Away Game – Wriddhiman Saha On Playing IPL 2022 Qualifier 1 In Kolkata

Updated - 23 May 2022, 10:19 PM

Veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, who is part of Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, said that the Eden Gardens is not his home ground and he is in Kolkata to play an away game.

Wriddhiman Saha, who in his Ranji Trophy debut smashed a marvellous century at the Eden Gardens in 2007, is looking for an exit from Bengal domestic team due to some issues with CAB.

Ahead of Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2022, Saha said that the Motera is his home ground as he is no longer part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and he represents Gujarat Titans (GT).

“Here, I’m representing Gujarat so my home ground is Motera Stadium, I believe in that. Since I’m no longer with KKR, the Eden is not my home,” Saha said in a virtual media interaction ahead of their IPL Qualifier One clash against Rajasthan Royals.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman was further asked whether he would be seen playing for Bengal at the Eden again, to which he responded by saying that he doesn’t have an answer for that question.

“I’m not able to answer the second part of your question. I might have played a lot of games here in the past but I’m here to play an away game,” Saha said.

Notably, Wriddhiman Saha was included in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy team for the quarter-final against Jharkhand without his consent.

The wicket-keeper was also annoyed that the CAB assistant secretary Debabrata Das had questioned his commitment after he didn’t participate in the league stage of the marquee domestic competition.

I don’t think about India team selection – Wriddhiman Saha

Saha was dropped from the Indian Test squad ahead of the Sri Lanka series at home and head coach Rahul Dravid had informed him that he wouldn’t be considered for selection as the management wants to groom a young wicket-keeper. Also, he has not been included in the squad for the one-off Test against England.

Meanwhile, Wriddhiman Saha said that he does not think about the selection to the India National Cricket Team and his focus is on the games he plays.

“It’s always team first for me and not individual performance. I don’t think about (India team) selection as we are here to play the Qualifier One. All our focus is on the match,” Saha said on the eve of their IPL Qualifier One against Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens.

“My main target always is to contribute in batting, keeping in every match that I play in and take the team over the line. That’s my first priority and it’s always a bonus to reach a personal milestone — fifty or 100.”

Saha, who has scored over 300 runs for GT in the IPL 2022, said that he will look at the Qualifier 1 against RR as just another match.

“The role given to me here suits me the best. I love to go all out, and take some risks in the first six overs,” he said.

“I’ve played in the qualifier, IPL final in the past. I’m aware of the environment, but it’s just another match for us. Won’t do anything extra, that’s our planning,” he said.
