IPL 2022: Pace Isn't Everything; You Also Need Some Skill And Use Of The Mind To Go With That – RP Singh On Umran Malik

Former India National Cricket Team speedster RP Singh, while talking about Jammu & Kashmir pacer Umran Malik, who plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), said that the pace is not everything and the 22-year-old needs to develop his skills.

Umran Malik has been one of the most talked-about names in the country in the last few weeks. The young pacer possesses the ability to consistently clock the deliveries at over 150 kmph.

So far in the Indian Premier League 2022, Umran has bagged 15 wickets, including a 4-wicket and a 5-wicket haul. However, his performance in the last couple of games has been very poor as against Chennai Super Kings he got smashed for 48 and against Delhi Capitals he got smashed for 52. Notably, in both the games he went wicketless.

While analysing Umran’s performance after the game against Delhi Capitals, RP Singh said that the 22-year-old is not ready for the big stage and he needs to improve a lot. He said:

“You can see that he’s perhaps in the preparation zone for the big stage, but isn’t properly prepared yet. He was tried in the powerplay where he got a good drubbing and the same happened in the slog overs. So, you need to improve a lot.”

Singh said that a fast bowler needs to be skilful and clever because the pace is not everything.

“Pace isn’t everything. You are a fast bowler with pace, which is a great thing but you also need some skill and use of the mind to go with that – you should know where to bowl against which batter,” RP Singh said during an interaction on Cricbuzz.

The 36-year-old added that the Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer is on the right path but he got a “reality check” in the game against Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals.

“And you learn that with experience, can’t do it after just two-three games, need a lot of time. Umran Malik is on the right path but this was a massive reality check that when you miss even by a small margin, you will get smashed,” he added.
