5 Players Who Are Big Hits In T20 Internationals But Flopped In The IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the grandest stage as far as T20 cricket is concerned. And, that is not only because of the glitz, glamour, and insane amount of money that one usually associates the IPL with.

It is the biggest arena because the best players from around the world take center stage to showcase their skills.

But, not every celebrated cricketer has been able to replicate his international performances in the IPL. And, one of the many reasons behind that is sometimes their price tag and the pressure of expectations that come with it proceed to get the better of them.

And, over the years, there have been several cricketers who have failed to replicate their international T20 performances in the IPL-

On that note, here’s a look at 5 Players Who Are Big Hits In T20 Internationals But Flopped In The IPL:

Aaron Finch

One of the elite white-ball openers of the modern era, it is baffling, to say the least, that Aussie white-ball captain never really got a hang of the IPL despite being a stellar performer in the international arena.

The only player to feature in as many as 8 IPL teams, Aaron Finch last turned up for the IPL in red and gold of RCB in 2020.

But another underwhelming season saw the right-handed swashbuckler not only get released ahead of the 2021 auction but he also ended up unsold.

Aaron Finch has featured in 71 T20Is for Australia in which he has scored 2346 runs at an average of 38.46 and a blistering strike rate of 152.14 with 16 50+ scores which includes two hundred.

His IPL stats are, however, a pale shadow of his international numbers. In 87 IPL games, Finch managed just 2005 runs at an average of 25.38 and an underwhelming strike rate of 127.71 with 14 50+ scores.

Martin Guptill

Martin Guptill is yet another elite white-ball opener who, despite establishing himself as one of the greats in the T20 format while playing for New Zealand or franchise-based leagues, could never establish himself in the IPL.

Guptill, who has represented teams like SunRisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, and Punjab Kings in the IPL, managed just 270 in 13 IPL outings at an average of 22.5 and a strike rate of 137.76 with just 1 50+ score.

As far as his international T20 numbers are concerned, Guptill has 2939 runs against his name in 102 matches and he has got those runs at an average of 32.3 and a strike rate of 136.82 which also includes 17 50s and a couple of three-figure scores.

Colin Munro

Another T20I powerhouse who could not emulate the same kind of performances in the IPL is Kiwi opener, Colin Munro.

Munro has featured in 65 T20Is in which he has scored 1724 runs at an average of 31.35 and a blistering strike rate of 156.44 with 11 50s and as many as three hundred.

The Kiwi swashbuckler has represented the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals across three IPL seasons but his inability to counter the slow and sluggish tracks has resulted in underwhelming performances.

In 13 IPL games, Colin Munro has managed a mere 177 runs at an average of 14.75 and a strike rate of 125.33 with 0 50+ scores.

Eoin Morgan

Another celebrated international white-ball cricketer who has failed to live up to his billing in IPL, it’s got to be England limited-overs skipper, Eoin Morgan.

Morgan has had considerable success in international T20s but he has almost underwhelmed in the IPL.

The Ireland-born English cricketer has been featuring in the IPL since 2010 but barring the 2020 edition where he smashed 418 runs at an average of 41.80 and a strike rate of 138.41, he has been a disappointment.

Morgan was in the midst of yet another horrific season- 92 runs in 7 games at 15.33- before the IPL got suspended due to Covid.

Glenn Maxwell

Well! You can say that Glenn Maxwell was on a redemption spree in the IPL this year before the tournament got suspended due to multiple Covid cases but despite that, it is fair to say that the Australian superstar has failed to live up to his billing for a major part of his IPL career thus far.

Maxwell, who became a million-dollar baby when he was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2013 auctions, had a stellar 2014 season for the Punjab Kings as he smashed a whirlwind 552 runs in 16 games at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 187.75 with 4 50+ scores.

But post that season, Maxwell endured an extended period of mediocre performances in the cash-rich league. In the next five seasons before the latest edition, Maxwell managed to get past the 300+ run in just one season- IPL 2017 where he scored 310 runs at an average of 31 and a strike rate of 173.18.

Maxwell endured his worst possible season last year where he managed just 108 runs in 11 innings at an average of 15.42 and a strike rate of 101.88. The most mind-boggling stat was that he failed to hit a single six during the entire season.

The Australian all-rounder was in the midst of a brilliant season this year. In 6 innings, the right-hander had scored 223 runs at an average of 37.16 and a strike rate of 144.80 with 2 50+ scores.

While Maxwell’s IPL performances have been underwhelming more often than not, this has not been the case in international cricket. In 72 T2OI fixtures, Glenn has 1780 runs against his name and he scored them at an average of 31.79 and a strike rate of 158.93 with 9 50s and 3 hundred.
