IPL: Complete List Of Bowlers Who Have Picked A Five Wicket Haul In The Tournament

It is not often that the bowlers manage to pick up a five-wicket haul in IPL history and the current IPL edition has already added two more bowlers to the list. It is a big achievement for the bowler considering that all the limitations for them in the modern generation and the game have drifted towards the batsman a lot more than the bowlers.

Despite all, the bowlers have tried out a lot of variations to get ahead of the batsman but still, the toughest ball to play for the batsmen has been the yorker. Here is the complete list of bowlers who have picked up a five-wicket haul in the tournament.

Sohail Tanvir:

The Pakistan left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir was the first bowler in IPL history to pick up a five-wicket haul in the 2008 inaugural edition. He finished with figures of 6 wickets for 14 runs at a splendid economy rate of 3.5 in his four-over spell against the Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur. Tanvir’s performance did help Rajasthan to win the match against CSK in the group stages.

The Indian seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji from Tamil Nadu was one of the standout bowlers for CSK in the early seasons and he was the second bowler to pick a fifer in the IPL 2008. He finished with figures of 5 wickets for 24 runs at an economy rate of 6 and he helped CSK to win against the Punjab franchise with a brilliant bowling performance.

The leg spinner Amit Mishra who is the second-highest wicket-taker in IPL history did take five wickets in the inaugural edition playing for the Delhi Daredevils. He picked up five wickets for just 17 runs in his four-over spell at an economy rate of 4.25 and helped Daredevils defend their total against the Deccan Chargers with a superb spell of bowling.

Probably, the best spell in the list of the bowlers who have taken a five-wicket haul was from Indian legendary spinner Anil Kumble in 2009 at the Newland’s Capetown. Kumble picked up five wickets for just five runs and ran through the batting order of Rajasthan in a low-scoring game. Rajasthan was all out for 58 in their second innings due to the devastating spell from Anil Kumble and RCB won the game easily.

The overall highest wicket-taker in IPL, Lasith Malinga did pick up a five-wicket haul in the 2011 edition playing for the Mumbai Indians against the Delhi Daredevils. He finished with figures of 5 wickets for 13 runs in his four-over spell with an economy rate of 3.54. His efforts helped Mumbai win the game against the Delhi Daredevils.

Harbhajan Singh:

The second fifer in the 2011 edition was with the veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh playing for the Mumbai Indians. Harbhajan picked up five wickets for just 18 runs in his four-over spell at an economy rate of 4.50. His excellent spell led Mumbai to victory over the Chennai Super Kings in the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The tall Indian fast bowler from Delhi, Ishant Sharma picked up a five-wicket haul playing for the Deccan Chargers in the 2011 edition. He picked up five wickets for just 12 runs in his four-over spell at an economy rate of 4. His fiery spell helped the Deccan Chargers to win the game against Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Ishant is currently playing for the Delhi franchise in the ongoing edition.

The Indian seamer Munaf Patel took the fourth five-wicket haul in the 2011 edition playing for the Mumbai Indians against the Punjab franchise in the Mohali Stadium. He picked up five wickets for just 21 runs at an economy rate of 5.25 and he was the first bowler in IPL history to end up on the losing side despite picking up a fifer in the game. The 2011 WorldCup winner for India has now retired from professional cricket in 2018.

The left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja who is more an all-rounder now did enjoy a lot of success in the early seasons of IPL with his bowling. He picked up five wickets for just 16 runs in his four-over spell at an economy rate of 4 and helped his team Chennai Super Kings win the game against Deccan Chargers in the 2012 edition. He is currently part of the CSK franchise in the ongoing IPL 2021.

The all-rounder from England was one of the few players to take part in the early IPL seasons from his nation and he picked up a five-wicket haul during his campaign in IPL 2012 playing for the Punjab franchise. He finished with figures of five wickets for 25 runs at an economy rate of 6.25 and helped his franchise win against the Pune Warriors India team.

The mystery spinner Sunil Narine has been a match-winner for the Kolkata Knight Riders ever since he was picked up and he has a fifer against the Punjab franchise in IPL 2012. He finished with five wickets for 19 runs at an economy rate of 4.75. He was the second bowler in IPL history to end up on the losing side despite picking up five wickets.

James Faulkner:

The Australian all-rounder had an excellent start to his IPL career with the Rajasthan Royals and picked up two five-wicket hauls in the 2013 edition for the Rajasthan Royals. He was the first bowler to achieve the feat in IPL history and he picked up two fifers against the same opponent Sunrisers Hyderabad. His figures were five for 20 and five for 16 in the two spells.

Jaydev Unadkat was the second bowler to achieve the feat of two five-wicket hauls in their IPL career. He was also the last bowler to pick up two five-wicket hauls with the first one coming in 2013 and the second one coming in 2017. His figures in the 2013 edition were five for 25 and in the 2017 edition, it was five for 30. Currently, he is with the Rajasthan Royals squad for the ongoing edition.

The Australian leg spinner Adam Zampa had an excellent start to his IPL career with the Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2016 IPL. He finished with figures of 6 wickets for 19 runs in his four-over spell at an economy rate of 4.75. His excellent spell helped Rising Pune Supergiants overcome Sunrises Hyderabad. Zampa is currently part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad for the ongoing IPL.

The Australian bowler Andrew Tye was very effective in his early IPL career and had a magnificent start. The 2018 orange cap holder picked up five wickets for just 17 runs at an economy rate of 4.25 playing for the Gujarat Lions against the Rising Pune Supergiants in the Rajkot stadium. He is currently with the Rajasthan Royals squad in the ongoing edition and has added a bit of pace to his armoury.

The Indian bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar had an excellent IPL in the 2016 and 2017 editions where he bagged the purple cap twice in a row for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He picked up five wickets for 19 runs at an economy rate of 4.75 against the Punjab franchise in the 2017 edition in the Rajiv Gandhi stadium. He currently plays for the same franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad and is the leader of the bowling attack.

Ankit Rajpoot produced a brilliant spell of bowling in the 2018 edition for the Punjab franchise in which he picked up a five-wicket haul against the Kings XI Punjab. He finished with figures of five wickets for 14 runs in his fiery spell at an economy rate of 3.50 and almost pulled off a victory for his team from nowhere. He played for the Rajasthan Royals in the last IPL and failed to have a good season.

The West Indies quick Alzarri Joseph was brought in as a replacement by the Mumbai Indians in the 2019 edition and he managed to have an immediate impact by picking up a five-wicket haul. He finished with six wickets for just 12 runs in his four-over spell at an economy rate of 3.27. However, he faded off after the brilliant start to his IPL career and was released by the Mumbai Indians.

The mystery spinner from Tamil Nadu bowled a brilliant spell for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the last IPL and picked up a five-wicket haul against the Delhi Capitals. He finished with figures of five wickets for 20 runs and his excellent run of form earned him a maiden call up to the Indian T20 squad. However, he failed to clear the fitness test and had to miss out on his national debut.

Harshal Patel:

The Indian all-rounder from Haryana had been around the IPL teams for a while now, but his five-wicket haul in the first match of this edition will certainly help to grow his confidence. He picked five wickets for 27 runs and almost got a hattrick in the last over in MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. He would be aiming to stay on the top of the wicket-takers tally by picking up wickets regularly.

The West Indian all-rounder who is known for the big hits did not have the best of outings with the bat, but he did produce a fine spell of bowling picking up five wickets for just 15 runs in his two-over spell. He ripped apart the Mumbai Indians batting and his wide yorkers proved to be an effective idea. He will be looking to get a lot more wickets in the coming days.
