New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson continues his incredible form in Test cricket as he became the fastest Kiwi bowler to take 50 wickets in Tests. He achieved the feat during the third day of the ongoing first Test against India.

Jamieson dismissed Shubman Gill with his first delivery in India’s second innings to reach the milestone. He took 9 Tests to reach the feat, overtaking Shane Bond who took 12 matches to do the same.

His credentials were questioned before coming to India as he had mostly bowled in seamer-friendly conditions. However, his performance in the first Test so far has put an end to the debate regarding his prowess across different conditions.

He was New Zealand’s best bowler on Day 1 of the Test, taking three wickets out of the four that fell, without any assistance from the surface. It was quite crucial as the hosts were running away with the game but Jamieson struck at vital points to keep them in check.

Axar Patel was the star of the day as he took a record fifth five-wicket haul in just four matches to restrict the Kiwis to 295. The opening stand of 151 between Tom Latham and Will Young was undone as the rest of the batsmen couldn’t show the same amount of application against the relentless spin attack from the hosts.

Ashwin provided the first breakthrough, removing Young for 89 before Umesh Yadav sent Kane Williamson back with the new ball at the stroke of Lunch. The second session went completely awry for the Black Caps, and they folded up for 295, giving India a lead of 49.

Gill fell early on but Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal ensured India didn’t have any more hiccups and went to Stumps with a lead of 63.
