Former Indian pace bowler RP Singh opined that Indian skipper Rohit Sharma should have played the upcoming T20I home series against South Africa.

India begins the five-match T20I series against Temba Bavuma and his men on June 9 in their roadmap for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rested senior players including the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah for the South Africa T20Is.

In Rohit’s absence, KL Rahul will lead the 18-member squad for the five T20 International fixtures this month.

RP Singh, who played 10 T20I games for India, is of the opinion that Rohit wasn’t in need of a break at the moment.

“I think he should have played the series. Taking rest or not is his personal thought. It depends on how much fatigue he is experiencing. But I don’t think there was a need for a break. He should have played. It’s a long series and, remember, he is the captain as well,” RP Sing told India TV cricket.

Rohit Sharma’s performances have been inconsistent in IPL 2022

In IPL 2022, Rohit accumulated 268 runs in 14 matches at an abysmal average of 19.14 and a strike rate of 120.18 with the highest score of 48.

“In the IPL, Rohit hasn’t scored over 400 runs in the last few seasons. There are many others who have crossed the 400-run mark,” RP Singh said.

“His performances have been inconsistent in the tournament but he used to come up with a couple of match-winning knocks. So everyone felt the spark in his batting was there. In the shortest format, you need match-winners. Even if they fire in a couple of matches, the team will win those,” he added.

The first T20I between India and South Africa will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
