Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reckons that pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in contention for a spot in India’s squad for this year’s T20 World Cup set to be held in Australia.

The senior pacer was ineffective in South Africa but he had a decent series against the West Indies at home. In the first T20I against Sri Lanka, he picked up a wicket off his first delivery.

Powerplay wickets are extremely crucial for the bowling team and a swing bowler like Bhuvneshwar can provide the breakthrough regularly, especially on bouncy and lively pitches like the ones in Australia.

He is again making a point. Yes, he had a pretty ordinary series in South Africa. But he has come back well. Again, look at the competition, nobody can take his place for granted.

He has been a senior bowler for such a long time, the moment he slipped a little bit and questions were asked about him, he has picked himself up,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Gavaskar added that Bhuvneshwar is constantly trying to improve his bowling and adapt to the surfaces he plays on. With his experience, he can definitely provide a lot of value in an important ICC tournament.

He hasn’t gone into a shell, thinking ‘oh what is going to happen?’. He has worked harder, he has looked at his bowling and he is trying to get better with every passing day.

And that’s what is important. He is not resting on his laurels. He is saying with the extra pace and the bounce that I will get in Australia, he will be in the frame,” he further added.

India takes on Sri Lanka in the second T20I on Saturday.
