India National Cricket Team all-format captain Rohit Sharma has said that the senior batting duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara will be part of the team’s future plans and the players who are going to replace them have done exceptionally well whenever they have got an opportunity.

Senior batters Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara were dropped from the Indian Test squad along with Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka and it will be after a very long time the Indian Test team will be playing without Rahane and Pujara.

Meanwhile, during a virtual press-conference skipper Rohit lauded the Test specialists Rahane and Pujara and said that they have played a huge role in India’s success in Test cricket over the years.

“What Pujara, Rahane have done for this team you cannot put it out in words. All the years of hard work, overseas victories, India’s No.1 ranking – these guys have played their part. They will be a part of our future plans,” Rohit said at the presser.

“Players who are going to replace Pujara, Rahane have done exceedingly well whenever they have got the opportunity. We need to back these guys to come good for us,” Rohit added.

The No.3 and No.5 spots in the Indian Test batting unit are vacant with Rahane and Pujara getting dropped and there are three contenders – Hanuma Vihari Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill – fighting for those two positions.

The 34-year-old Rohit was recently appointed as India’s Test captain after Virat Kohli decided to step down from Test captaincy after a Test series defeat against South Africa. Rohit will be the 35th cricketer to lead India in Test cricket.

Meanwhile, he has said that his philosophy of captaincy will remain the same in the longest format of the game.

“My philosophy of captaincy will remain the same -staying in the present, understanding the situation and what is the right call to make at that moment.”

Rohit will be making his Test captaincy debut in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. The first Test match of the series will be played from March 4 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh the second Test will be played from March 12 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
