Indian captain Rohit Sharma praised middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer for his terrific performance in the second T20 International against Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka, where India won by 7 wickets to win the three-match series.

Winning the toss, India invited Sri Lanka to bat first and the decision didn’t go in the favour of Rohit Sharma and co. as the Sri Lankan batters performed brilliantly. The top performers for Sri Lanka were Pathum Nissanka, who smashed 75 runs, and captain Dasun Shanaka, who scored 47 runs at a strike rate of 247.36.

Chasing the target India lost the wicket of captain Rohit Sharma in the last ball of the first over. However, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra and Sanju Samson performed incredibly well for India and helped the team seal the series.

Shreyas Iyer scored sensational 74 runs off 44 balls and his innings was filled with 6 fours and 4 maximums and he batted with an amazing strike rate of 168.18.

Don’t want to be too harsh on the bowlers – Rohit Sharma

During the post-match presentation, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that the middle-order batting unit performing well was very important for the team. He said:

“Yeah, it was something that was important, for the middle-order to come and string together a partnership was good to see. It’s happened quite a few times over the past few games.”

The 34-year-old said that he doesn’t want to be too harsh on the bowlers for leaking a lot of runs in the last 5 overs. He asserted:

“Don’t want to be too harsh on the bowlers, these things happen. We bowled well in the first few overs (in the batting powerplay), restricted them well, 80 runs in the last five overs, it’s something we need to understand on things to be done in the last five overs, but we did well in the first 15 overs.”

The pitch was superb, the ball was coming on nicely and these things do happen. We have a lot of talent in that batting unit, we will keep giving them the chances, it’s up to them to make the most of it.”

India all-format captain Rohit Sharma was highly impressed with the performance of wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. He said:

I thought Sanju showed how well he could play with that knock, it’s all about taking your opportunities. Was an important knock from Shreyas, couldn’t have asked anything more from him, Jaddu came up well with the bat.”

Rohit Sharma signed off by talking about the potential changes the Indian team would look forward to making in the third T20I after the series victory. Rohit elaborated:

“We’ll sit down tomorrow, see what we can do (on any team changes), we have used 27 players so far, there could be more (laughs). When you win the series, there are guys who haven’t had the opportunities. Some of the guys will have to play Tests, we’ll have to look after everyone. It’s the sign of the times we’re in, it’s fine to look after physically, but it’s the mental thing that’s important as well. At the end of the day, we need to keep winning and keep positive vibes going through in the team.”
