Ahead of Nidahas Trophy SLC await availability of injured Angelo Mathews

Hoping against hope, Sri Lanka Cricket (SCL) Board expected that the senior all-rounder Angelo Mathews to be fit for the impending tri-nation series. The Nidahas trophy is beginning from March 6, in Colombo.

Pertinently, the other two teams in the triangular Twenty20 competition are India and Bangladesh.

On the other side, Sri Lanka suffered massive blows in the recent past.

However, owing to the sigh of a relief, batsman Kusal Perera alongside fast bowlers in the form of Nuwan Pradeep and Dushmantha Chameera. Both have made an all-important return.

Mathews was scheduled to represent his local club Colts Cricket Club (CCC). However, he struggled with his right hamstring on the regular basis. It simultaneously saw him missing out on the distinct Test series in the 2017 calendar year.

Interestingly, the professionals expected Mathews represented their respective teams in the domestic fold. The domestic tournament has kicked off on February 24.

Moreover, quartet received injuries in the recently culminated tour in Bangladesh. It further forced them to be sidelined for the T20I series.

The 30-year-old Colombo-based all-rounder Mathews has been marred by injuries since past one year.

Recently, Angelo was sidelined due to a hamstring for the two-match Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh. He appeared in just one ODI of the tri-nation series which included Zimbabwe.

Sri Lankan team has been in trouble as injury cloud loomed large in the competitive cricket.

The limited-overs skipper Angelo Mathews is undergoing an extensive rehabilitation programme.

Fitness test to be held this week:

All four cricketers are scheduled to be assessed on February 27 in Colombo.

The selectors have shown satisfaction in three of the four players. Interestingly, they are hoping to introduce Mathews in the squad for the home series.

Untimely injuries haunt Sri Lanka:

Asela Gunaratne and Shehan Madushanka already suffering from respective injuries. Gunaratne was flown to home after injuring his right shoulder during the fielding drill in Bangladesh.

On the side, Madushanka picked hamstring injury in the recently completed T20I series.

Kickoff of Nidahas Trophy 2018:

The week-long training camp will be held in Colombo which is beginning from February 28.

The first match of the tri-nation series will be played between India and Bangladesh at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The final is slated for March 18.

Lasith Malinga is aiming for the comeback:

Lasith Malinga is eyeing to make a comeback in the national set-up. He has rolled over his arm for the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC).

On February 24, premium fast-bowler Malinga bagged two scalps against Kalutara Town Club (KTC). He returned to bag three wickets against Police.

Malinga has taken the field alongside Upul Tharanga and Dinesh Chandimal.

Malinga’s future will be decided by the chief coach Chandika Hathurusingha, according to the SLC report.

In February, the 34-year-old Galle-born Malinga was overlooked for Bangladesh tour. He previously represented Sri Lanka in September 2017 against India, in Colombo.
