The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had suggested the International Cricket Council (ICC) hold an e-auction to sell the media rights for its tournaments.

It had first made the recommendation on an ICC forum. Soon after, BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, had also suggested the same at the last Chief Executives Committee (CEC) meeting in Dubai in April.

In case further rounds of Bids are requested, IBC plans to use an e-auction process. Details of the package(s) and the reserve price(s) will be confirmed to Bidders, and the intention is to run the process the day after the opening of Envelope B. Bidders will be provided with further details of the e-auction process when the full response to clarifications is issued,” the ICC said in an email accessed by Cricbuzz.

The BCCI did ask this question and Anurag (Dahiya, the chief commercial officer) clarified why the online model cannot be adopted by the ICC. That was happily accepted and subsequently approved by the Board,” it added.

The move is considered better as it is more transparent and the IPL media rights were sold in the exact same manner. Having adopted the e-auction method, the apex council will soon reveal the details as interested parties are unsure how to proceed.

There are more than one way to do these things and they each don’t make the other wrong. Our approach is designed to drive maximum value for our members,” a member of the Council said.

The e-auction is expected to be there only for the second round. The first round will see the sealed envelopes being opened on August 26 and the tender is for the 2024-2031 media rights for the Indian region.
