The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly said to form a Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. The Apex Council of the BCCI in its latest meeting approved the office-bearers to form the LOC.

The formation of the LOC is likely to be completed at the end of this month but according to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI is aiming to push someone from the board itself to lead the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the marquee event, which is scheduled to take place in India next year.

The Indian board wants the ICC chairman’s post for an Indian given that they will host the event. Sharad Pawar, who was the ICC chairman in the period between 2010-12, was the head of ICC when India jointly hosted the 2011 World Cup with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI will opt between candidates like acting CEO Hemang Amin and GM Gaurav Saxena. “The office-bearers have been authorised to form the LOC,” a member of the BCCI told Cricbuzz.

ICC’s current chairman Greg Barclay’s tenure expires this year

In November 2020, New Zealand’s Greg Barclay was elected as the independent chairman of the ICC. The 60-year-old administrator’s first two-year tenure will end this year but not sure whether it will end in December or July, the month when usually a new ICC chairman takes the charge. According to the rules, the chairman of ICC can look for two more terms of two years.

The BCCI and Barclay, who was the former director of New Zealand Cricket, share cordial relations between them as it is said that the Indian board played a vital role in the administrator’s election in 2020. Barclay had helped the Indian board to quickly clear the important files during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 last year held in UAE and Oman.
