Cricket South Africa and broadcasters SuperSport have come together and struck a deal over launching of a new T20 tournament scheduled to start on January 2023. This is the board’s third attempt to launch a new T20 league after the failure of the Global T20 league and Mzansi Super League.

The board has issued an official statement about its association with SuperSport for the new T20 tournament. “We are excited by the formation of something this fresh and invigorating, which also offers the opportunity for private investment into the franchises. CSA has already received interest from a number of potential local and international investors” said Pholetsi Moseki, CSA CEO.

Marc Jury, CEO at SuperSport has responded to the same expressing his happiness with this association.

“We are delighted to invest in a product that will change the face of South African cricket. There is an early-year gap in the calendar, so the timing is ideal” he said.

Meanwhile, this is Cricket South Africa‘s third attempt at launching a T20 tournament after the failure of the Global T20 league followed by the Mzansi Super League.

The ideal of the Global T20 league failed due to the lack of securing a proper television and broadcast right. On the other hand, the Mzansi Super League failed due to the ineffective changes in South Africa‘s domestic structure. Two editions of the Super League had been played and it was in the third edition that the problems started creeping up leading to the abandonment of the tournament.

“The parties have invested significant sums of money into the joint venture. Governance and commercial sustainability are priorities for the board of this new entity. All successful leagues are underpinned by strong domestic TV rights deals, which has been secured for this property,” the board release stated saying the board is optimistic about the upcoming T20 tournament.
